Chickens 2006
New for 2008 - my blog -
High Desert Gardening
No chickens for 2006. We spent all year putting in infrastructure
items like water and electricity. The blessing in this is that I
have had many hours to plan and dream about chickens.

Egg Care
refrigerate as soon as possible - because bacteria multiply
faster at higher temps and also because an egg spoils
7 times faster at room temperature as it will when
refrigerater
store pointed ends down
Slightly dirty egg can be brushed off or
cleaned with fine grained sand paper - the objective
being to both not wet the egg with water and to remove
as little of the natural sealant on the surface of the
egg as possible
collecting eggs two or more times a day helps prevent
them from getting cracked or dirty - also means you are
interacting with your chickens more, making them more
comfortable with you and less stressed.
stored in a standard home refrigerator, they will keep
fresh about 5 weeks; longer if you can provide higher
humidity - around 70%
Avoid Food Poisoning
Ok, common sense stuff that you probably figured out for yourself
already...
discard cracked or extremely dirty eggs
wash hands and utensils after handling raw eggs
cook eggs and foods with lots of egg in them to 160*F
