Plants and Gardens at KMom's

New for 2008 - my blog - High Desert Gardening

In the summer of 2005, our family and the bank purchased 4.77 acres of sand in the Great Basin of Nevada's High Desert. Even without research, I knew it was going to be a challenging environment to garden in. There are many books and websites on gardening in the desert, but almost exclusively, they deal with the Low Desert - places that are scalding in the summer, and pleasantly warm in the winter. That is a different place than the High Desert. While our area rarely exceeds 105*F, Spring might not arrive until the beginning of June, and may stay only a few weeks before the sun starts scortching and the winds start blowing. And a few short months later, the desicating winds give way to cold days and frosty nights - welcomed by humans, but deadly to the garden.

So here you will get to see just how little I knew/know, even with books and research in hand! Nothing like experience for a teacher!

Generic "King Alfred Type" daffodil from Lowe's planted fall of 2005... the question being, did they survive summer and will they come back in 2007.
