General Gardening In The High Desert

The High Desert is a brutal place to garden. Some of the challenges include:

  • Daytime to night time temperature swings of 30-40*F
  • Summer temps over 100*F for weeks to months in a row
  • Total percipitation of 10-17" a year
  • Less than 5" of the percipitaion falling as rain
  • When it does rain, only 1/4 to 1/2 inch falls at a time, and often less than that
  • Full sun that is wayyyy more Full Sun than the people who write "Full Sun" on plant labels ever considered; everything benefits from a little mid day shade
  • Pure sand to at least 5 feet down - no organic matter and drains too fast to keep nutrients in

My weapons of choise to fight Mother Nature with:

  • Mulch, mulch, mulch...
    mulch is my mantra
  • Drip Irrigation
  • Mulch, mulch, mulch...
  • PVC pipe and water run everywhere
  • Mulch, mulch, mulch...
  •
    Sand, Sand Everywhere
Note how this wild flower/weed is growing in pure sand.

    Grows in Pure Sand
The wild flowers/weeds DO prove, however, that there ARE things that will grow in pure sand.
