New for 2008 - my blog - High Desert Gardening

Rural Life
  • Hobby Farms Magazine Describes my dream in lovely color photos, interesting and informative articles. Even the advertisements are interesting and useful. A little on the pricey side, but worth it. ( http://www.hobbyfarmsmagazine.com/hf/ )

  • Back Yard Poultry I love this magazine.

  • Mother Earth News Often practical and useful, but gets a little heavy on the liberal political views for me. I subscribe off and on.

  • Countryside Magazine useful, friendly writing style by regular people

  • The Owner Built Homestead: A How To Do It Book
    by Barbara & Ken Kern
    Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons
©1977 Ken Kern & Barbara Kern
    ISBN 0-684-14922-2 & 0-684-14926-5 pbk
IMHO, this is a Must Have Book. It's out of print, but sometimes you can find it used.

  • Reader's Digest book Back to Basics: How to Learn and Enjoy Traditional American Skills
I like the older version with the yellow cover as opposed to the newer version that you can find at the bookstore today.

  • Carla Emery's site (not reviewed). I haven't looked at the site, but her book, The Encyclopedia of Country Living has all kinds of useful, interesting and entertaining things in it.

  • Read anything and everything by Gene Logsdon .

    • Two Acre Eden
      Gene Logsdon
      Rodale Press, Emmaus, PA

      ISBN 0-87857-290-2 (hardcover)
      ISBN 0-87857-308-9 (paperback)
IMHO, a Must Have Book. Originally published nearly fourty years ago, it is still, or possibly more, applicable to the modern homesteader.
  • Homestead.org Highly recommended. Many good "how to" articles cover a substantial amount of useful information. Well organized.

  • Homesteadinginfo.com Has links to many articles and also lists of useful books. This appears to be more a collection of links than the web owners own work. Some useful stuff here. Worth looking at.

  • homesteadingtoday.com forum (not reviewed)

  • Simply Self Sufficiency and msn group (not reviewed)

  • Simplicity Resource Guide This is a "forum". Although I did not subscribe, I was able to view the discussion topics and items. It is not strictly for homesteaders or gardeners, but does have many topics of interest to both.

  • America's last homesteader (not reviewed)

  • Mother Earth News: Rural, Urban and Suburban Homesteading an article by the Mother Earth News magazine (not reviewed)

  • A water treatment FAQ (not reviewed)

    Flora
  • Dave's Garden Far and away the best gardening community I have found in decades of surfing the web. Nice, Knowledgeable folks. Extensive plant database with photos. Many forums for gardening, farming, homesteading, tomato-holics. Also forums for non-garden, non-ag topics such as crafts, stay at home moms, and more. ( http://www.davesgarden.com/ )

  • Organic Gardening I really should subscribe.
  • Pine Tree Garden (Seeds)
  • Territorial Seeds Good prices, good seeds, good customer service.
