In Transit When I announced that I had bought a home in Nevada, my employer was gracious enough to make me feel indespensible and transfered me to our Reno office. Unfortunately, the site preparation and setting up of our manufactured home was delayed several times, resulting in me and our son living at The Silver Legacy and Circus Circus on The Strip in the Biggest Little City in the Wold for nearly two months. Meanwhile my husband stayed at my Mom's, kept his diesel mechanic job in California, and commuted out to see us for the weekends. The poor doggies shared a large kennel just outside of Carson City.

Our son and I would visit the property 2 or 3 times a week, and then we would all hang out on the weekends until the summer sun was well down. It was frustrating and exhausting, but we survived. Because we had no choice - our home in the suburbs had already been sold, and there was no turning back now.

Now you might think that staying at the Silver Legacy and Circus Circus would cost a pretty penny, and while it did, oddly enough, during the weekdays, Sun-Thursday, they were cheaper than staying at the Motel 8 nearer to my work. Cleaner, better maintained, and with 24 hour security & room service.

Some tips for living in a hotel with a teenage boy for two months:

  • Bring a TV & the XBox - the XBox will not always work on the hotel TV
  • Block the hotel video game service and his ability to rent adult movies - the games will cost you an arm and a leg, and blocking the movies keeps a bord kid out of trouble
  • Have lots of good humor
  • Pack an ice chest with lots of drinks & junk food - you think a teenage boy will bankrupt you with his eating, wait until you are paying room service prices to fill him with carbs
  • Consider not allowing him to be able to order room service on his own
  • Remind him that the waitresses are not for staring at and that his eyes should remain in his head
  • Budget extra money for trips to the bookstore and to wal-mart just so you can get out of the hotel for a little while
  • Find out where the nearest laundromat in a safe area is and drive there - the hotel laundry service is not designed for doing a week's worth of laundry and will surely bankrupt you
