The Daffodils are Blooming!
Must mean that, even though snow threatens in the first
week of April, Spring 2006 is here!
Last fall, during prime spring bulb planting time, we were crazily running around trying to move into our new home and get our son settled into his new high school. Time and energy to think about anything past the moment was in short supply. On impulse, I bought two bags of 50 each of "King Alfred Type" daffs from Lowe's. Along with good intentions, they sat in the metal building for well into the planting season for zone 6b. Then, on a bright winter afternoon, I tucked some into the earth and a few more into a planter and a basket. Several more never made it into the ground, and I suppose they are still in the metal shed, quietly, sadly drying out and fading away. To a California girl with bits of her heart still in The South, Winter takes forever here in Nevada. I hoped, but had no real clue if the bulbs would survive. But, as you can see, they did survive, and by Tax Time, nearly two dozen blooms are up and smiling.
Daylilies have arrived!
Further proof that Spring is here. They arrived on a week day, however, so they will remain in buckets of water about 1/2 way up their roots until planting time on the weekend.
This year's order was placed with Valley of the Daylilies, and all plants arrived healthy and green. The order included such exotic varieties as:
- Akron Unmistakable
- David Holman
- Journey's End
- Serene Madonna
- Undulata
- Wedding Festival
- Etruscan tomb
- Conan
- Friar's Lantern
- Maid Marian's Kiss

Spring 2006
The results of planning ahead: forced daffodils bloomed
almost a month earlier than their outdoor counterparts.
Daylilies are here!
Ordered in January 2006 when the cold winds blew, snow fell,
and the ground was frozen. Arrived 12 April, 2006.
